Black Women For Wellness Celebrates Black Maternal Health Week With ‘Black Joy Guide’ Launch and 2nd Annual Black Mamas Birthing Tour

Healing Legacies

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 4, 2025

[Los Angeles, CA] – Black Women for Wellness (BWW) is proud to announce a powerful lineup of events in celebration of Black Maternal Health Week 2025 (April 11-17), a week dedicated to raising awareness and advocating for solutions to Black maternal and infant health disparities. The purpose of #BMHW25 is to highlight efforts led by @BlackMamasMatterAlliance (BMMA) and collectively work toward a future where all Black Mamas have the rights, respect, and resources to thrive before, during, and after pregnancy. This year’s theme is “Healing Legacies: Strengthening Black Maternal Health Through Collective Action and Advocacy!”

Black Women for Wellness is excited to introduce our Black Joy Guide, a resource designed to empower and uplift Black pregnant women and mothers in Los Angeles County. Additionally, BWW will embark on the 2nd Annual Black Mamas Birthing Tour to raise awareness of culturally affirming care options for Black pregnant women and birthing people in Los Angeles County. This tour will showcase birthing spaces and resources that prioritize the health, dignity, and joy of Black mothers.

Every five days in California a person loses their life to pregnancy-related complications, according to the 2025 Birthing Care Pathways report. This pregnancy-related mortality and morbidity crisis is disproportionately impacting Black, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Pacific Islander pregnant and postpartum individuals.

The Black Joy Guide Launch: Centering Black Mothers and Community

On Friday, April 11th, 2025, BWW will launch its Black Joy Guide— a resource to empower and support those seeking maternal care at Kaiser Permanente and within surrounding communities. The guide offers strategies, support networks, and resources to help Black mothers navigate pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum with confidence and care. The launch event will bring together Black pregnant women, Black mothers, maternal health advocates, community leaders, and Kaiser Permanente healthcare professionals to foster dialogue and share actionable solutions for improving Black maternal health outcomes.

This event will include:

  • Community Conversations: An engaging discussion on the impact of racial disparities in maternal care and the importance of joy-centered, culturally competent care and support.
  • Networking & Resources: An opportunity for attendees to connect with service providers and maternal health organizations dedicated to improving Black birth experiences.

The Black Mamas Birthing Tour: Expanding Access to Affirming Maternal Care

BWW is also launching the second annual Black Mamas Birthing Tour, a community-driven initiative focused on connecting Black pregnant women with providers who offer culturally affirming and patient-centered care. Throughout Black Maternal Health Week, in partnership with dedicated healthcare providers and community allies like The Irth App, we will visit hospitals and alternative birthing centers to explore local community resources, connect with holistic care providers, and strengthen the village of support networks that empower Black mothers and families. Partnering healthcare institutions include Providence Little Company of Mary Torrace, Kaiser Permanente South Bay, MLK Jr. Community Hospital Medical Center, and Kindred Space LA.
