Conversations with a Chemist: Sunscreen for Melanin-Rich Skin

Dr. Taminika Ferguson and Mahogany Smith Christopher discussed the importance of sun protection for melanin-rich skin and addressed myths surrounding sunscreen use among Black people. Mahogany, an environmental scientist at the California Department of Toxic Substances Control, shared her background and research on harmful chemicals in beauty products, emphasizing the need for consumers to carefully evaluate product ingredients rather than rely on marketing claims. The discussion covered various aspects including product safety, entrepreneurship challenges for Black businesses, and the importance of raising awareness about harmful ingredients in personal care products through accessible science education.

Conversations with a Chemist: The Trauma of Curly & Coily Hair

This meeting focused on the cultural significance, societal impact, and personal experiences related to curly and coily hair, particularly within the Black community. Panelists discussed the historical context of hair discrimination, the effects of Eurocentric beauty standards, and the importance of self-acceptance and inclusive spaces. The conversation also addressed microaggressions, strategies for dealing with them, and the need for policy changes and education to promote hair acceptance and protect against harmful chemicals in beauty products.
