From Sexualized to Sacred: Reclaiming Black Women’s Breast Health

October is Breast Health Awareness Month, and this year, Black Women for Wellness (BWW) is leading our From Sexualized to Sacred: Reclaiming Black Women’s Breast Health campaign. We need your help to amplify this important message.

For too long, Black women’s breasts have been sexualized, stigmatized, and ignored in healthcare systems, contributing to higher breast cancer mortality and disparities in care. This campaign reframes breast health as sacred, powerful, and worthy of care, ensuring Black women are seen, heard, and supported in their wellness journeys.

This toolkit contains simple and engaging ways for you or your organization to join us in action as we recognize Breast Health Month and reclaim Black women’s breasts as sacred. Use these resources to amplify the message, share information about Black Women for Wellness’ upcoming events, and educate your community about breast health disparities.

Campaign Overview

This campaign directly confronts the historic and ongoing sexualization of Black women’s breasts while reclaiming them as sacred, powerful, and worthy of care. It reframes breast health as a matter of dignity, justice, and survival, ensuring that Black women are seen, heard, and supported in their wellness journeys. We will do this by:

  • Breaking the silence around the stigma tied to Black women’s breasts
  • Educating the community about breast cancer disparities and the importance of early detection
  • Recognizing the history of exploitation and reclaiming Black women’s breasts as sacred
  • Inspiring community action through screenings, storytelling, and advocacy

Here’s How You Can Support the Campaign!

  1. Share on social media: Post graphics, event details, and messaging to your channels to help amplify the message.
  2. Include in your newsletter: Add information about Breast Health Month, key facts on Black women’s health disparities, upcoming events, and resources in your next email to your community.
  3. Attend and participate in events: Join us at the Bra Party, Nail Tech Workshop, and Mammograms & Manicures, and encourage your network to come along.
