We are honored to host Historian and Author Dr. Alison Rose Jefferson, Ph.D., who will discuss the Great Black Migration to California and the establishment and loss of historic Black leisure sites, including Bruce’s Beach (Manhattan Beach), Santa Monica’s Bay Street Beach (the “Inkwell”), Val Verde (” the Black Palm Springs”), and Lake Elsinore.
Dr. Jefferson will also explore how this history influences contemporary life and its impact on public policy regarding beach access, heritage, and nature conservation.
She is the author of the award winning book, “Living the California Dream: African American Leisure Sites during the Jim Crow Era” (University of Nebraska Press). You can purchase an autographed copy of the book from Dr. Jefferson at her website, www.alisonrosejefferson.com.
