One of the major concerns in the reproductive justice movement is the alarming infant and maternal mortality rates among Black patients in the United States.
Although the United States is considered a high-income country that spends a substantial amount of money on healthcare, we still have the highest maternal mortality rates compared to other countries of similar income and spending.
Even more concerning, Black patients make up a disproportionate number of maternal morbidity cases as well as maternal deaths. Physicians commonly take on an important role in assisting a birthing parent through their pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum care, and many of those physicians strongly advocate for adequate, equitable reproductive healthcare access.
