LUKKEE THORPE

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE FELLOW

Lukkee is a recent BWW EJ fellow.

He received his BS from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a MS from the University of California Riverside, both in Environmental Science with a focus in Soil Biogeochemistry. Their research has focused on water quality and restoration in the state of California under the SGMA act that was passed in 2014. The access of clean water has been a driver for their EJ work. Lukkee has worked with Akoma Community Unity Center and the Peoples Collective for Environmental Justice (PCEJ) to create a youth-led community based research project oriented around public schools and at-home water testing for the city of San Bernardino. This research project has been presented to the city council members of San Bernardino with a successful acceptance of a second year of funding.

Throughout his academic career, Lukkee has done environmental justice work that is at the intersection of oppressed racial and queer identities, systemically-socioeconomically disadvantaged people, and the working class, that honors afro-indigenous feminist theorists along with the Black radical tradition of liberation work. They have been part of numerous organizations that have ranged from Grad Students for Palestine (GSP), Food Not Bombs, Stop Cop City, Climate Justice Alliance (CJA) Black caucus, and so much more. The commonality of all these organizations and mutual aids is that they all align with the goal of community oriented work that alleviated the pressures of the individual. Lukkee strongly believes that to achieve true liberation, we must connect the intersections of environmental justice with every aspect of our lives and work as a community; out of many, one people.
